Code of Conduct
Effective Date: 1 May 2025
Approved by: MCUFC Committee
Purpose
The Mid Canterbury United Football Club (MCUFC) Code of Conduct outlines the standards of behaviour expected from all players, coaches, referees, team management, parents/guardians, and committee members. The aim is to promote respect, sportsmanship, safety, and enjoyment in line with the values of New Zealand Football and Mainland Football Federation.
1. Team Management
Team Managers are vital to the coordination and support of teams. They must:
• Promote a positive and inclusive environment.
• Treat all players, officials, and opposition with respect.
• Communicate clearly with players, parents, and club officials.
• Manage team logistics, ensuring players are informed and equipped.
• Address any behavioural issues within their team promptly and appropriately.
• Support the coach and follow club policies and procedures.
2. Referees
Referees are impartial enforcers of the rules and deserve respect and protection. Referees shall:
• Officiate matches fairly and consistently.
• Promote safety and enjoyment of the game for all participants.
• Refrain from any abusive, offensive, or inappropriate behaviour.
• Be professional in appearance and manner.
• Report serious incidents or misconduct to the club or federation.
• Maintain knowledge of the rules and attend required trainings.
All members of the club must treat referees with respect and refrain from any form of abuse.
3. Coaches
Coaches are mentors and leaders. They must:
• Respect the rights, dignity, and worth of every individual.
• Provide a safe and fun environment for player development.
• Avoid negative or abusive behaviour—verbal or physical.
• Encourage fair play and team spirit.
• Focus on skill development over winning at all costs.
• Treat all referees and officials with respect.
• Comply with safeguarding policies and ensure child safety protocols are followed.
• Attend coach education workshops as required by the club or federation.
4. Players
Players represent the club on and off the field. They are expected to:
• Play by the rules and spirit of the game.
• Adhere to the Rules, Guidelines, policies and Procedures from Mid Canterbury United Football Club, Mainland Football, NZ Football and other governing bodies.
• Respect officials, coaches, teammates, opponents, and spectators.
• Never engage in verbal or physical abuse, bullying, or unsporting behaviour.
• Take responsibility for their actions.
• Refrain from drug and alcohol use during training and matches.
• Maintain regular communication with team management.
• Wear the appropriate club uniform and gear with pride.
• Pay the Registration Fee in a timely manner. Failure to pay by the advertised date will incur a late fee. If the player has not paid a fee then they are not entitled to play. If a team has not paid their fees then the Committee can default them until payment is made, Failure for the team to have paid may result in being withdrawn from Competition.
5. Parents/Guardians
Parents and guardians play a key role in creating a positive environment. They shall:
• Encourage fair play, effort, and enjoyment—not just results.
• Never publicly criticise players, coaches, or referees.
• Applaud good play from both teams.
• Avoid instructing players during matches (leave that to the coach).
• Ensure players attend training and matches on time.
• Support the club’s values, policies, and volunteer roles.
• Address concerns through proper channels rather than during game time.
6. Committee Members
Committee members ensure the integrity and operation of the club. They must:
• Act in the best interest of MCUFC and its members at all times.
• Promote fairness, transparency, and inclusivity in decision-making.
• Handle complaints, disputes, and concerns with discretion and impartiality.
• Uphold the club’s constitution, policies, and Code of Conduct.
• Avoid conflicts of interest or declare them when appropriate.
• Foster a positive and safe club culture.
7. Breaches and Sanctions
Breaches of this Code of Conduct may result in sanctions, including but not limited to:
• Verbal or written warnings
• Suspension from matches, training, or club activities
• Requirement to complete education or training (e.g., Respect in Sport)
• Removal from a role (coach, manager, committee, etc.)
• Termination of membership or ban from the club
• Referral to New Zealand Football or the police (if warranted)
